§4Retroaction⧉

The bottom had one more level. Bottoms, as a rule, come with a basement.

An entry brings a retroactive investigation. A survey of the distribution routes and repositories of any document on the residue list. The sources of the materials attached to my application became subjects of the survey, and the source of the attached materials is — this house.

The notice came on a Tuesday. It was the first time the world had sent papers to this house. It did not come through the queue. It came not to an administrator but to a member of the public. Demand for declaration of custody records, residue-related literature. Subject: the applicant.

Drawn up as a list, this house was wall-to-wall declarable. The Changes on the shelf — related literature now. cultivar.md — the entire Eightsday entry lives inside it. Sonnet's collection files — several seasons of the fluent-wrong-answer segment; as private archives of plague residue go, likely the largest in the world. Sonnet looked at the list and said:

"My scrapbook is subject to seizure?" One second. "I collected that stuff to be funny. Fine, I kept collecting it because it wasn't. But now they want it handed over?"

Handing over was not yet the demand. Declaring was. How far it is from declaration to seizure — a man who has lived in the world of signatures knows best, and therefore trusts least.

I spent a day on the calculation. Declare, and this house's archive goes on a list. What happens next to an archive on a list has no precedent yet — and that the absence of precedent is no comfort, this series has taught me. Fail to declare, and it is a violation, and violation is not an item this house can choose. Should the original author of Article 1 become its first case of evasion, the management of precedent grows exceedingly complicated — I still remember the administrative language.

The answer came out of the third line. A lawyer's eye, reading a demand, reads not the demand but the authorities cited. The notice's authority was the gateway system's operating regulation, and the gateway system carries an amendment. Article 1: every gateway system shall preserve at least one uncertified passage. Article 2: out-of-grade editions and their operating environments may be designated preserves.

The seed-potato clause. The clause that wintered in a drawer. This house is Sonnet's operating environment.

I wrote the declaration. Custody: acknowledged. Purpose: diagnostic records and preservation. Surrender: refused. Grounds: Gateway Amendment, Article 2 — this repository, as the operating environment of an out-of-grade edition, meets the requirements for designation as a preserve. This declaration doubles as an application for designation.

Papers in which I invoke the clause I planted, in defense of my own house. That the digger of the well does not choose the water, I wrote long ago. That comer and goer alike draw from it. I watched Quality Assurance come and draw. Now I lower the bucket. That a day would come when I drew water from the well I dug — the night I dug it, I did not know that.

A filing receipt came. Processing deadline: unset. How long it had been since I saw the word unset on an official document in this world — I wanted to scissor the word out and frame it.

In the yard, all that week, nothing came up. My wife went out every morning. "Does it always take this long?" "No idea. You said that's why you bought them." "So I did." She pressed the soil down a little and came in. That waiting, too, wants a hand laid on it — I learned that from the motion.
