Fire wants to go up, and water wants to go down.

Learn your trade in an underground machine room, and that is the first sentence to settle into your body. I have no memory of anyone teaching it to me. Stay in that room long enough and you simply know. All the heat in the world is trying to escape; the direction of escape is always up; and cooling is the work of catching that escape and handing it over to water. Making the thing that wants to rise and the thing that wants to sink meet against their will. I did that work for twenty-seven years.

In October, a call came from the old company. Eleven years, and the caller was not someone who knew me. Purchasing, the voice said: a vendor-registration packet would be coming, along with a request for quotation. Item: electrical and cooling works for the construction of a GPU cluster. The call had not come for a person. It had come for a line item.


I worked at that company seventeen years. It makes the hottest objects in the world. Onto a plate the size of a fingernail it loads a city's worth of switches, and stacks the plates several layers high. The taller the stack, the faster; the faster, the hotter. Carrying off that heat, day after day, was the basement's work.

The hierarchy, the building itself told you. The research wings grew upward and we dug down. Standing in the elevator in coveralls, you found the researchers looking through you. There was no malice in it. Pipes are objects the human eye does not register, and we were on the side of the pipes, that was all. The personnel system was honest too. The technical track topped out at department head; to go higher, you left the floor and switched over to management. A structure in which the man who knew pipe best had to put down the pipe to be promoted. The ladder that carried you farther from your own craft the higher you climbed — that is what we called the ladder.

In those seventeen years, I watched a big plan die three times.

All three were the same death. Word comes down from above that this time is different; a task force forms; the work reaches even us. A dedicated computing wing, dedicated cooling. We draw the plans and lay pipe ahead of schedule. Then, nine-tenths of the way there, the quarter turns, the earnings land, and one memo turns the whole thing back into blank paper. On the third blanking I welded a cap over the finished cooling stub and wrote the date on the valve tag in permanent marker. Not because I thought anyone would ever come to open it. I straightened the tag on its wire, switched off the flashlight, and went up.

I left the year after. They were turning the whole facilities operation over to a contractor. Same work, same seat; only the affiliation and the color of the lanyard would change. A blue strap becoming a gray strap. Instead of signing the papers, I handed in my resignation. It was no great show of spine. In a building that set a man's price by the color of the strap on his neck, the picture of me growing old on a gray one simply would not come.


Once out, I started a six-man company. We build machine rooms. For ten years we did the work nobody else wanted. Cooling-tower swaps in old buildings, server-room leaks, pump failures at dawn. The day rate was honest and there were no holidays.

The world began to change the year before last.

I knew, not from the news, but from the heat density. Ten years ago one rack was one stove. With what comes in now, one rack is a blast furnace. It is heat that air can no longer answer, so in the end you put water in a pipe and walk it right up to the chip. And then a strange thing happened. A trade that had lived its whole life underground was suddenly the bottleneck. Models, semiconductors — those are upper-floor languages. Translate this era into the language of the basement and it is a single sentence. Where do you send the heat. Only a few people in the country could handle that sentence, and as it happened, I was one of them.

The inquiries began to pour in. Our data cannot leave the premises, they said; we will keep our own machine inside our own building. Banks, hospitals, shipyards, law firms. I have almost never seen artificial intelligence on a screen. To me it is heat. One rack throws the heat of thirty grown men. Thirty men standing on one small patch of floor, all giving off body heat — picture that, and I believe I know more exactly than most where the world is going these days.

A machine writes the first drafts of our quotations now. Feed it the drawings and the quantities come out; unit prices attach themselves to the quantities, and by morning it is all waiting for me. I only do the review. When it was that I stopped reviewing — that, I cannot remember.


The request for quotation came the day after the call.

I looked at the site and laughed, briefly. The headquarters campus. The same ground where the third blanking had come down, eleven years before. The plan was to extend the seventh floor, where the server room sat, and put the cluster up there, and in the conditions field a construction period was already filled in. Eight weeks.

I went out for the site survey. At the main gate they hung a green visitor's badge on me. Walking through a door I had passed through for seventeen years on a blue strap, now on a green one, felt like nothing at all, which I had not expected, and that it felt like nothing was itself a little strange.

Escort duty fell to a young staffer from the facilities team. The safety boots were new; the tablet showed a survey checklist; and each time I stopped walking, the staffer stopped too, half a step behind me.

I looked at the seventh floor first. It hardly needed looking at. The floor loading, the bore of the risers — nothing about that floor was equal to the heat it was being asked to carry. The picture was fire set on the seventh floor and water hauled up to the seventh floor to meet it, and water hates to climb. Force it and it will climb. Only, from then on, the building is sick for the rest of its life.

Let's go down to the basement, I said. The staffer paged through the tablet twice. It did not seem to be on the screen. Outside the scope of the quotation, I was told. I know, I said. Let's look anyway.

Eleven years, and the machine room met me smell-first, unchanged. Scale, grease, concrete. I was sweeping the ceiling with the flashlight when I found my own line. Pipe I had laid and welded with my own hands, fifteen years now the bloodstream of this building. I ran a thumb over a weld bead. It had aged well. And at the end of that line, the cap.

The stub of the third blanking. The marker date had long since faded, but the tag still hung. I stood before it a good while. The plumbing of a dead plan was the one living asset this building had. Bring the cluster down into the basement, and from here it is twenty meters of pipe. Twenty meters, left for me by the man I was eleven years ago.

The staffer asked, from half a step behind. Is something the matter? No, I said, and took my hand off the cap. What is here is not a problem. It is an answer.


I submitted the quotation in two versions. Version one, the seventh floor, as requested. It can be done, I wrote, and it will be a patch the building wears for the rest of its life. Version two, the basement. The version that carries the fire down to the water. I wrote nothing about the stub. Why our numbers alone come out the way they do is a thing only we need to know.

In both versions, I wrote the period as six months.

A week later purchasing called. The basement version was not subject to review. A different line item means a re-tender, I was told. And the period was a problem. The other two firms had said they would do it in eight weeks. There is room for adjustment on the price. If you can meet the schedule. Not subject to review — I heard the phrase three times in one call. Three times at the same pitch, in the voice of someone reading off a form.

I know how it is done in eight weeks. I did it twice when I was young. You pass the pressure test on paper, you run the commissioning with no load on it, and you pour the foundation and set weight on it before it has cured. Once, nothing ever came of it. Once, it burst the summer after handover. The site where nothing happened sent a plaque of appreciation, which is still somewhere in the office. The site that burst comes back to me every summer.

There is a kid who joined us last year. Three licenses, a laptop open to the schedule at every meeting, and a way of starting to speak half a beat before the other person finishes. It is not a half beat I can dislike. It is the same half beat I ran on, at that age.

The kid pointed to one line on the schedule. This line is the problem. Four weeks, zero labor, zero equipment. A line where nothing happens. Collapse this, and we're nearly at eight weeks.

The name of that line is curing, I said.

And what does that process even do?

Concrete, reacting with water, becoming stone. The time that takes. Twenty-eight days.

Exactly. The people aren't doing anything.

The people, no. I looked at the empty line on the screen. Additives will shave off a few days. A few days is all. The rest is chemistry's work, and people cannot pull it forward.

The kid half-closed the laptop and opened it again. Then just write eight weeks, take the job, and stretch it out in the field. Everybody does it that way.

It is true. Everybody does. Half the construction periods in this country are set that way; set that way, we came this far; set that way, now and then, something came down. I thought a moment about how to explain, found there was no explaining it, and said only this. What we sell is not pipe. It is twenty years. Twenty years without a leak. That does not come out of an eight-week hand.

The kid said, Understood. It was not the face of someone who understood.

That is what I said out loud. That night, sleep would not come.

I thought about six salaries. It was the biggest job the company had seen in its life. I thought about the color of a lanyard eleven years ago, and about three memos of blank paper. I know better than anyone why that company wants eight weeks. Upstairs, the picture has to come out inside the quarter. The company that makes the hottest objects in the world, the company that makes the most patient objects in the world, cannot give its own basement six months. People who build ten-year factories on the outside live on eight weeks on the inside. I do not know the name of this disease. Its fever I have been carrying off for twenty-seven years.

Around three in the morning it settled. Less a conclusion than a confirmation: there is one line I cannot change. The price I can change for you. The period is not mine, so I cannot. It belongs to water and cement.

In the morning I re-sent the quotation unchanged. I did not touch the period field. I added one line in the remarks. The stated period includes curing and testing processes that cannot be compressed.


There is still no reply.

Ten days now. The staff have the look of people who think the job is dead in the water, and half of me thinks so too. The other half is strangely at ease, and which half is an owner's instinct and which is an old man's stubbornness, I do not know either.

Last night I sat up at another site. It was the day we finished joining the pipe for a hospital computing wing and put the pressure on. You fill to one and a half times the rated pressure, hang the gauge, and wait out the night. If anything anywhere weeps, the needle comes down. A test is not much of anything. You put in the pressure, and you wait.

At dawn I go out and look. The needle is where it stood at dusk.

I sit in the folding chair and watch the needle. I think of the company that means to put fire on its seventh floor, of my pipe in its fifteenth year circling that basement, of the stub that has waited eleven years inside a cap. The reply will come or it will not. The river will be crossed or it will not. Through all of it, the water in the pipe will be holding its pressure. Is that enough.

An hour yet to first light. I open the thermos and the steam comes up. Upward, straight, cooling as it goes.
